Hello and thank you for visiting
Curly Birds is a blog devoted to crafts for children and the art of play. I'm Helen and I write tutorials for children and adults focused on hand-sewing felt as well as crafting with paper and up-cycled household items.
In 2012, Curly Birds was named as one of Babble's Top 50 Mom Craft Blogs - #2 in Best for Kids and #6 in Best for Parents.
I come from a long line of creative and crafty people who have inspired me to make instead of buy. My mum knitted, sewed and cross-stitched her way though my childhood and I learnt to sew when I was very young. I can't remember a time before sewing!
Curly Birds is aptly named for my sweet, curly-haired twin girls.
My husband, girls and I enjoy picnics, tea parties, gardening and general family fun in Tennessee. I moved to the U.S. when I was 16. But, it wasn't until I met my husband, Eric, and explored more of the U.S. that I fell in love with this country. I still hold England close to my heart and hope to bring my girls up to feel a bit English.
My family has always been spread over two continents - Europe and North America. As a child in England, my family spent a lot of time making gifts for our loved-ones far away in America. In turn, my aunt and grandmother sent lovely hand-made pretties to us. Now that my girls have cousins in several states and aunts over a few countries, we try to stay connected by sending meaningful hand-made gifts.

Most of all, I enjoy making things for my girls to infuse their lives with a little more love.
